there's opera and there's chinese opera. i know, because my mother-in-law has chinese opera yodeling away on the tv. unlike opera, which pretty much utilizes the full register, chinese opera likes its voices and instruments to fraternize exclusively in the upper register. this creates the unfortunate musical equivalent of fingernails screeching across the blackboard. it's enough to send non-habitués running for the hills.
